WITandWISDOM(tm) - May 27, 1998
God has so constituted our nature that we cannot be happy unless we are or think we are the means of good to others. We can scarcely conceive of greater wretchedness than must be felt by him who knows he is wholly useless in the world. - Erskine Mason (1805 - 1851)

You do not need to trek into jungles, grapple with wild animals in third world countries to be a missionary. Look around, the harvest field is ripe: the jungle of concrete buildings and stony hearts are around you, there are many perishing for they live by bread alone, "The wicked lie in wait for the righteous, seeking their very lives" [Psalm 37:32].
A caveat: You will not be likely to accomplish your task effortlessly. Expect violent opposition, expect "scoffers", expect even persecution. But expect also that this baptism by fire to burn out the dross in you, and you will be refined like gold and silver, for in the last days if you are made of anything else, expect to be consumed with the rest of them.

THIS & THAT:
A man was walking across the road when he met the accident. The impact was on his head which caused him to be comatose for two days before he finally regained consciousness. When open his eyes, his wife was there beside him. He held her hands and said meaningfully: "You have always been beside me. When I was a struggling university student, I failed again and again. You were always there beside me, encouraging me to go on trying . . ." She squeezed his hands as he continued: "When I went for all the major interviews and failed to clinch any of the jobs, you were there beside me, cutting out more advertisements for me to apply . . ." He continued "Then I started work at this little firm and finally got to handle a big contract. I blew it because of one little mistake. And you were there beside me."
Then I finally got another job after being laid off for sometime. But I never seemed to be promoted and my hard work was not recognized. As such, I remained in the same position from the day I joined the company until now . . . And you were there beside me."
Her eyes brimmed with tears as she listened to her husband: "And now I met with an accident and when I woke up, you are here beside me . . . There's something I'll really like to say to you . . ."
She flung herself on the bed to hug her husband, and sobbing with emotion.
He said . . . , "I think you really bring me bad luck . . ."

Most people living in the first world countries are surprised to find out that, worldwide, the use of bicycles for transportation greatly outnumbers automobiles. In China, for example, which has one-fifth of the world's population, bicycles outnumber automobiles 250 to 1. - Price Pritchett, "MindShift"
